Our hotel in Bacharach in called Hotel Kranenburg. It's owned by a German and Phillipino couple and is in one of the tallest castles in Bacharach. Our room was the VERY HIGHEST room in the hotel, basically in the tip top of the tower. Our room had a beautiful view of the Rhine River, hillside vineyards, and other ruins on the hillside. Pretty amazing.
Dinner was together with the group tonight in the hotel - Leek Soup, chicken with mushroom sauce, veggies and homemade noodles. One interesting thing we've noticed in Belgium, Netherlands and Germany is that you have to pay for water - tap water either isn't free or you have to pay for bottled

Today was one of the days we were looking most forward to on this trip - touring the Rhine Valley!
We started the day with a walking tour of the town of Bacharach. The tour was led by a native of the town, an 83 year old man named Herr Jung. He was absolutely fabulous! Funny, informative, full of history and knowledge. The whole of the two hours spent with him was truly a one on a kind experience. He had recommended several books to us that discuss what it was like to be a child in Germany during the war. Interesting, as Americans we do not hear a whole lot about the German side of the war or what it was like for German citizens who were essentially victims themselves. We will be reading some of these books when we return.
After the tour we took a 30 minute bus ride from Bacharach to the town of St. Goar. Cute little shopping and dining area. We had a lunch of Bratwurst, potatoes and sauerkrat. Delish!
Toured the castle of Burg Reinfels from the 1200s, which translated means "Rhinestone Castle". Used by the lords of that time to collect tariffs from ships and boats passing along the river Rhine.
We then took an hour long cruise ship ride from St. Goar back to our hotel in Bacharach along the Rhine River. Dinner in the hotel and walked along the shoreline in the evening.
